ROD STEWART
Still The Same ... Great Rock Classics Of Our Time (J)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

Ya gotta hand it to Rod the perpetual mod. Out of all the sixties rocker has-beens still clawing away at chart action, he's the only one to figure out that after the magic of penning hits disappears (usually a five year span, tops), the only way to remain entertainment fodder is to hijack the endless standards catalogue. So here he goes again, this time pilfering a series of ghastly lovey dovey ballads like "Love Hurts," "Missing You" and "Fooled Around and Fell In Love". It's so sickly sweet it hurts - much like an ice cream headache. Of course the old Rod croons it up for the laz-y-boy generation; not like the young Rod who would've torn this material to sexy pieces. The legions will no doubt be very pleased in this comfort zone. Most importantly old Rod looks exactly like young Rod - it's amazing. Oh and if the Brits can giggle like giddy schoolgirls over perfectly normal North American names like Randy, then we can surely snicker at perfectly proper Brit names like Rod.
