TRUDY LYNN
U Don't Know What Time It Is (Ruf)

Trudy Lynn's U Don't Know What Time It Is is a winner for this seasoned blues singer. After a half dozen releases on the Ichiban label, Trudy Lynn has joined the innovative indie Ruf Records, a little label that's capturing a lot of attention (and great blues artists). She's got a great feel for the blues, especially when her rhythm section of James Robertson on drums and Dwayne Thomas on bass powers the band through the title cut and one of my favorites of this 10-song disc, "Baby Come On Back." Trudy Lynn's sultry voice slows things down a bit on "Time is Running Out," which floats effortlessly on top of guest keyboardist Lucky Petersen's Hammond B-3 and Sang'n Clarence's sweet background vocals. Another special guest, Bernard Allison, sits in and launches a handful of refreshing solos alongside Butch Bonner's rhythm guitar. Whether she rocks the blues full-tilt, or oozes with a slow, soulful shuffle, Trudy Lynn is truly one of a kind. She's been called the "Divine Diva of Blues and Soul," and she definitely answered my prayers for a great blues record from start to finish. Just like she sings on U Know Don't Know What Time It Is, she's my "Ace in the Hole" among new blues CDs.
