BRECK ALAN
Kissing Rock Stars EP (self-released)

The thing that makes me nutso about listening to an EP is that even if like it,
I usually want to hear more to really make up my mind, and if I love it,
I... well I just want more and I want it now. In either case, it's a rare
occasion that any real atmosphere has been created in the course of 5 or 6 songs.
It's kind of like one of those pinky-sized rum sample bottles.
On the other hand, Breck Alan's EP, Kissing Rock Stars,
creates such a wonderful world of sound, imagery and atmosphere that I come out the
other end of this 25 minutes so thoroughly satisfied I feel like I should light up a
cigarette. Alan's songs all tell stories devoid of cliches and carry surprises for
those willing to pay attention, especially those who can process a range of emotions
at tempos where one normally wouldn't find them.
Even when he's got the entire band
oscillating around a tasty funked-up, wah-wah'd guitar ("Don't Mess Around"), he's
draws you right into the visuals, introducing you to the girl who thinks she's all
that. Head held high, Breck declares he won't beg for her company, while quietly
noting "but damn, you're lookin' fine..."
Contrast this with the sweetness of "A
Man And His Beautiful Wife," performed here twice, first with his full band and then
at the end of the disc as a solo with acoustic guitar. It seems our Mr. Breck has
a bit of range. If you're a softie, you'll want to sit back, eyes closed, and
soak up that final track in all it's naked emotion.
It's a fitting way to close
this not-quite half hour of first class music. Couple deep breaths, a moment of
reflection, then you look at the play button and think "ya wanna go again?"
