DON RIGSBY
Empty Old Mailbox (Sugar Hill)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Don Rigsby hasn't released a solo disc since 1998's A Vision, but he's hardly been absent from the recording scene. With projects including the groups Longview and The Lonesome River Band and a duo release with Dudley Connell, not to mention other studio work, touring and possibly trying to have some kind of life, it's somewhat surprising he finds time for solo albums at all.

Somewhat surprising, and totally delightful.

Empty Old Mailbox is a great bluegrass album, full of hot licks and striking vocal harmonies. Among the supporting cast are members of the bands he performs with, including Sugar Hill A listers like J.D. Crowe, Jerry Douglas and Larry Sparks. In addition to his own high lonesome lead and tenor vocals, Rigsby has recruited nine additional voices to mix and match as the tunes require.

"As the tunes require" is, in fact, the key element. Though the pickers can get fast and furious and the vocals can cut to your heart or lift your spirit, it's all done in the service of a terrific collection of songs, ranging from the Tom T. Hall penned title cut to traditional gospel. There's not a bad tune, or a less than terrific performanc, anywhere on this disc. Bluegrass fans will be glad to learn that Don Rigsby has found the time for another solo disc. Be patient for the next, though. The man's busy, and that's a good thing for music lovers.
