THE GOURDS
Bolsa De Agua (Sugar Hill)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

The Gourds have spent most of their five years with the Dutch label, Munich Records, which has given them an enviable fan base in Europe and some unfortunate distribution problems in the States. Sugar Hill is their home for their latest, Bolsa De Agua, and is in the process of getting out the rest of the catalog, too.

That's great news for fans of the Austin based quintet, who play a brand of countrified something or other that's beyond any category but great (how 'bout a cowpunk cover of Snoop Doggy Dogg's "Gin & Juice"? Categorize that, pardner.) If you're not a fan yet, you just haven't heard 'em or you just don't like American music. Tracing their lineage through Doug Sahm and Willie Nelson, the Gourds add their own twists and turns to the Austin musical saga. They write songs that can break your heart while you laugh you ass off, and play with an energy that will propel you to the nearest dance floor.

Pop a top on a longneck or two or three, toss this one in the player and gat ready for a treat.
