DR. LONNIE SMITH
The Turbanator (32 Jazz)

32 Jazz has rescued this 1991 set recorded at the Van Gelder studios for a
long overdue release. Although Dr. Lonnie Smith is not the most famous
purveyor of organ jazz, he stands among the best, and this is one of his
finer recorded efforts.
The backing band is first rate, featuring guitarist Jimmy Ponder, bassist
Buster Williams, drummer Buddy Williams and the inimitable Houston Person on
tenor saxophone. The list of great soul jazz albums featuring one or more
of these players would fill an issue of this magazine, and a supplement or
two to spare. Simply put, it's hard to imagine a stronger lineup for this
style of jazz.
Smith displays his piano roots on his original tune, "Night Song," and the
interplay with Ponder creates a classic jazz moment. Of course, listening
to the Dr. play the piano makes you wonder why he ever turned to the organ,
but he provides the answer himself in track after track of B-3 brilliance.
A tip of the hat to Todd Barkan and the 32 crew for getting this one out so
that it can get to where it belongs - and that's on you CD player.
