RUDY RAY MOORE
Hully Gully Fever (Norton)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

Prince Dumarr. The Human Tornado. Hully Gully Papa. Dolemite. Rudy Ray Moore doesn't suffer from multiple personalities, he embraces them. Recently embraced by 2 Live Crew (sampling his x-rated comedy albums), Insane Clown Posse (reprising his classic blaxploitation Dolemite pimp role on the big screen), and Ol' Dirty Bastard (using clips of Dolemite in a video), Moore's comeback is in full gear. Though his living was chiefly made through stand up and the overtly racy albums, the turbaned Moore was also a genuine soul artist, with a long recording career. That's where Norton comes in, compiling some wonderful nuggets ("Josephine", "I'm Mad With You") with classic radio spots, and a brief live recording from '63. It is on the latter, closing numbers where the real showman is finally put on display. Moore sizzles through a couple of numbers and is captured in his full egotistical glory as he chats up the ladies, giving out pictures of himself. "Turn the lights up so the ladies can get a good look at this handsome face. Now wouldn't you like to wake up next to me in the morning?" Who could resist that turban?
