DORIS DAY
Sweetheart Of Song (Collector's Choice)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
Among the many chapters in the career of Doris Day (hoofer until a car wreck ended that,
band singer with Les Brown's Band Of Renown, actress, etc) there was a stint as hostess
of a song-based radio show in 1951. This CD is one episode of A Date With Doris Day. The
sound has been cleaned up very nicely, but there are a few obvious edits that aren't in
places you'd expect to find commercial breaks. I'm talking about right in the middle of
a Doris Day speech. What they were editing for is anybody's guess. It's also puzzling that
the tone on the songs is a bit bassy, while the applause and dialogue that follows is extremely
bright. Old Time Radio (OTR) is just a hobby with me. An expert could probably crack this
case in a flash. Could it be that Doris and her guests were playing their records and passing
them off as live performances on the air? I have nothing to back such a guess up, but I do
find it interesting that Doris, singing the closing theme, said "Goodnight, everybody" before
her singing voice finished fading out. Things that make you go "hmmmmmm." All that aside,
it's a document of a show that I don't see floating around out there in download land, and
that's a significant thing. It's also an entertaining albeit corny little show.
