JUDE
King of Yesterday (Maverick Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Jude confuses me. Every time I hear him sing on someone else's record, I'm
just blown away by the sound of his voice, high-pitched and bordering on
girlie, but also incredibly evocative and beautiful. On the other hand, you
let the guy do his own record, and suddenly, that previously-beautiful
voice, perfect for backing up other singers or pitching in a refrain or two,
becomes extremely irritating in the front-and-center. His own songs are also
way too talky for my taste, with these million-word lyrics/unconvincing
diatribes against being normal, and the music? Well, it's what you'd expect
to hear from a band on Madonna's label, antiseptic, bubblegummy and
extremely predictable.
