A Nod to Bob, An Artists' Tribute to Bob Dylan on His Sixtieth Birthday (Red House Records)

Reviewed by Eric Steiner

A Nod to Bob is St. Paul, Minnesota's Red House Records' birthday card to the folksinger that put the Northern Minnesota mining town of Hibbing on the map. Frank Sinatra may have covered the great American songbook in his reign as Chairman of the Board, but Bob Dylan wrote a new one in more than five decades as a writer and American troubadour. Each of Dylan's periods is well-represented on this Red House Records tribute, home to another American troubadour, Greg Brown. Brown's "Pledging My Time" is a heartfelt tribute, and my other favorites include "Boots of Spanish Leather" from Martin Simpson and "It Ain't Me Babe" by Lucy Kaplansky. The liner notes include observations from each of the musicians participating in the birthday party, and they all have their own unique take on how Bob Dylan influenced their work. An amazing collection from a label that prides itself as home to some of America's most original troubadours.
