CAFE TACUBA
Vale Callampa (MCA)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
While the world waits for their fifth full-length release, the Mexican
quartet Cafe Tacuba offers up an EP that pays tribute to their friends, the
late great Chilean band Los Tres. Taking four songs from Los Tres'
extensive catalog, Cafe Tacuba process them through the unique sound and
sensibility that has made them a hero of the rock en espanol crowd and then
some (among the band's most notable admirers are the Kronos Quartet, with
whom they've done some impressive collaboration). The resulting music is
pleasingly perverse pop that will make old fans happy and should garner them
more than a few new fans.
