CALEXICO
Feast Of Wire (Quarterstick)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

At first the absence of the full blown mariachi trumpets is heart-breaking. How could Calexico leave that glorious musical thrill behind? But alas, like all bands worth their salt, the boys are just moving on, and anyone not hitching a ride is missing out. This may not be an out and out pop opus, there are too many jazzy inflections and diversions for that, but it's certainly Calexico's most accessible disc to date. Their trademark dusty prairie sprawl still seeps into the cracks, with hushed vocals, weepy slide guitars, brushed drums, accordions, violins and yes, even some trumpets. This is widescreen listening at its finest.
