Raunio (Squealer Music)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Spooky, ambient pieces with low, whispered chants in Japanese, high-pitched,
tinkly keyboards, disconnected guitar lines, haunting wails, and the
occasional piercing scream. Kind of like being trapped in a haunted
recording studio, I'd imagine, with the tortured voices of the hired
soundmen doomed to forever man the recording booth rising and falling just
out of earshot. It's a live recording, which could be some of the problem
here - I get the feeling from listening to this that the album is the product
of one hell of a jam session of experimental musicians, probably backed by a
decent light show and a fog machine, but just sitting and listening to the
album leaves a lot to be desired.
