DARIN GRAY
St. Louis Shuffle (Family Vineyard)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Ah, yes, another wise-ass composer determined to make me think I have to
rush out and buy brand new stereo equipment. First couple of times I put
this CD on, I was convinced that the laser must be just coated with tiny
motes of dust, and I spent a good half-hour on my knees with the rubbing
alcohol and the Q-tips so that CDs wouldn't skip when I tried to play them.
After pounding my head against my desk again and again during successive
listenings to this collection of built-in scratches, skips, thumps, and
ambient noise, I finally realized that the problem wasn't with my CD player
at all - the CD is supposed to sound like this. I think I'm going to buy a
copy of this for my dad, just to watch him go through the same audiophile
hell I went through trying to review this thing.
