GARRISON
The Model (Iodine Recordings)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Nice, melodic, emo/math-rock/post-punk (whatever the hell this stuff falls
under nowadays) that really strives for originality and a distinctive sound.
The songs are evocative and moody and high energy at the same time, with
great lead vocals and guitar work from Joseph Grillo and Ed McNamara. The
arrangements are all tight and full of surprises (like the well-timed,
gentle piano interlude in "Patient Mouth") and even though this is a formula
that's been done to death, they prove that it's still possible to create
good music within the confines of the genre. The way the backup vocals weave
in with the guitar and lead singer's voice in a lot of these songs reminds
me of early Cheap Trick ala "Surrender," even though the band doesn't
really sound like Cheap Trick at all.
