JESSE DAVIS
The Setup (Alltribe Records)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
Someone overhearing this disc casually might wonder which classic Cannonball
or Sonny Stitt album has finally been reissued. That's how well alto
saxophonist Jesse Davis has assimilated the vocabulary of hard bop. A bit
of close attention, though, will reveal a player with something new to add
to a time honored tradition. A pair of strong originals are combined with a
half dozen covers, including material from Jackie McLean, J.J. Johnson and
others that is too seldom heard. Whether playing music of his own invention
or his original interpretations, though, Davis displays the tone, skill and
soul that has made him one of the most distinctive musical voices to rise
from the chorus of the Young Lions of jazz.
He's assembled a quartet that includes guitarist Peter Bernstein, bassist
Ray Drummond and drummer Donald Edwards, worthy compatriots all. Bernstein,
in particular, adds some impressive solo work, and the decision to use a
guitar-led rhythm section was a notable inspiration, creating the perfect
sonic texture for Davis' sound and style.
