JOJO HERMANN
Defector (Fat Possum/Epitaph)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Not the usual dusty Delta blues fare that is Fat Possum's claim to fame, Defector is a rollicking good time rhythmic rock record like the ones Dylan and the Band used to make when they were in a giddy-up mood. Jojo Hermann sneaks off from his day job as piano man in Widespread Panic to kick start a singing career. Not a bad move since Hermann can certainly sing, and sing with a friendly charm. And as it turns out, he has a deft gift for delivering a devastating classic pop hook. Plenty of fancy ivory tinkling (natch) and string plucking makes this one go-go in a traditional late sixties southern fried groove feel. JoJo may never look back.
