LAURA THOMAS
On My Sleeve (Glennsource Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Yeah, hmm, can't tell what irritates me the most about this - the cover of
the cute girl with nice hair dressed as a punk rock/biker chick with angry
magic marker tattoos all over her arms, or the songs about abuse and female
oppression and being done wrong by men, all sung in a happy, lilting voice
with a choir of violins and pianos and gentle acoustic guitar cavorting in
the background. Laura Thomas has a beautiful voice, and the musicians here are all extremely proficient, but there's something about the entire
package that just seems so contrived, like suburban housewife poetry about
being a crack whore in the ghetto.
