LOVERS
Star Lit Sunken Ship (Orange Twin Records)
Reviewed by Holly Day
Incredibly beautiful, somber songs about love and loss, mostly, with the
occasional spiritual reference. The lead singer (Carolyn Berk) has an
exceptional dreamy, sweet voice that gives these songs a throaty Conor
Oberst (Bright Eyes) quality, down to the vibrato. The real attraction to
this album, though, is the backing music. While I haven't heard of violinist
Elina Tuhkanen before, she does wonderful work, if this album is any
example, and makes a wonderful accompaniment coupled to the ensemble of
banjo, slide guitar, and a range of other instruments (including an
accordion, a trombone, and a collection of glasses and shakers). The result
is a cross between a chamber orchestra, a folk band, and a shoegazer pop
act, which works just fine for me.
