LYLE LOVETT
Smile (Curb)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Collecting tunes Lovett has donated to movie scores may be an easy cash grab, but this collection works so well it's hard to carry a grudge. Even though the cinema sources vary from "Quiz Show" (the deliciously plodding "Mack the Knife") to "Toy Story" (the wonderfully sappy Randy Newman duet "You've Got a Friend In Me"), there is a definite style thread running throughout. Call this Lovett's "Standards" album and nobody would blink.
