SENSUS
Inertia (self-released)
Reviewed by Erick Mertz
I loaned my good friend - let's call him "Lars" - a copy of my favorite book, an intrepid tale of wilderness and provincialism, because I was sure he'd enjoy it. Perhaps, I pondered, the contained tale of a family, forging a niche from the untamed West would appeal to his rugged Nordic side. Some weeks later, while camping, I went into his tent for a can of bug spray when I found the book - my dog-eared copy, torn to shreds. I was crestfallen or struck dumb with woe. Pages were separated from the spine and the cover was positively reduced to tatters. Disappointment ran rife through me as I questioned the very fiber of our friendship.
But what if the reason my beloved book was rendered from original form were the voracious nature which "Lars" read it? Could I fault him if he were so deeply enraptured? No, for I myself tore through the book; only my tearing was figurative. Who am I to quibble then with "Lars" because we've encountered a figurative vs. literal semantic problem?
I feel this way about the new Sensus EP inertia. If I loan "Lars" this disc and he destroys it, passionately tearing the cover and scratching the precious underside, I'll still have the memories of a delightful work I'm unable to access again until he replaces it. And that would be a damn shame.
Art and friendship can be so complicated.
