SWEATMASTER
Sharp Cut (Bad Afro)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
This here is some rather fine Finnish rock and roll music.
They're a trio made up of Sasu Mykkänen, who sings and plays bass,
Mikko Luukko's on guitar and Matti Kallio on the drums. Together they
make some ultra-catchy music with elements of hard rock, soul, punk and
powerpop. Sasu's vocals in particular remind me, in different places, of
Bon Scott, Phil Lynott, Mark Farner and Gerry Rosalie. Suffice to say, I
can hear the influence of all those singer's bands here, that is to say
AC/DC, Thin Lizzy, Grand Funk Railroad, and the Sonics. They have great
riffs and a super-rock attitude that allows 'em to mix it up and come
out on top. "Hold On," for instance, is a catchy song with soulful
vocals that make for a hand-clapping, good time rock 'n' roll song.
Other goodies: "I Am a Demon and I Love Rock n' Roll," "Well Connected,"
"Get It, Get It," and "Nothing To Do But Win."
