Ute Lemper
But One Day ... (Decca)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
As an interpreter of Kurt Weill tunes, Ute Lemper has few peers. Her dispassionate delivery is what smoky Berlin nightclubs are all about. Unfortunately graduating from killer cover gal to songstress is most unbecoming. Lemper puts pen to paper on five tracks here, and though it's not a bad pitch, her tunes just don't stand up next to the Brel and Piazzolla pieces. This may be part of the learning curve, but it just doesn't go down right. Perhaps next time.
