DELBERT McCLINTON
Genuine Rhythm & The Blues (Hip-O)

This one should win whatever prize is available for the most appropriate
album title of the year. Producer Andy McKaie has dug into the
McClinton catalog for a 14 song set of covers, drawn from two of his
1970's RCA releases and another pair of his Capricorn albums, that fully
deliver on the title's promise. Look where McClinton turned for this
material - songs by Bo Diddley, Fats Domino, Jimmie Rodgers, Chuck
Berry, Willie Dixon, Doc Pomus and Don Covay, among others. Songs that
produced hits for Johnny Ace, James & Bobby Purify, Bobby "Blue" Bland,
Elvis Presley, Howling Wolf, Eric Clapton and Cream.
Delbert McClinton takes each one of these classic songs, made famous by
so many classic performances, and takes them right over. Downright owns
them by the time he's through with them. Chops, sorts and grinds them
through his own combination of Texas honky-tonk, blue-eyed soul and
red-dirt country, seasons them with soul and sweat and just by God owns
'em.
This is a great selection of great performances of great songs by a
great performer. Need any more excuses for a trip to the CD store? I
didn't think so.
