KARL DENSON
Karl Denson's Tiny Universe (KDTU)

Saxophonist/vocalist Karl Denson moved from Lenny Kravitz' orbit to the world of straight-ahead jazz before he landed on planet Funk with the Greyboy Allstars. With the demise of the Allstars, he's now the ruler of his own universe, tiny though it may be. So far, it's sprouted six stars, in the form of the six tracks on this debut disc. They shine brightly, though, and burn hot enough to hold promise for the birth of more.
The tracks, all Denson originals, are tough, tight and steeped in a funk that's informed as much by John Coltrane as Maceo Parker. That is, while the rhythmic elements are old-school enough to satisfy any funk aficionado, there are improvisational elements that push it further into the jazz realm than most straight funk sessions ever dare go. Still, there's a definite butt-bumpin' groove that permeates every change.
It all sounds a little different, but it feels just right. A new album is in the works for Brother Music (brothercal@aol.com). In the meantime, you can call Denson's merch folks at 1-800-437-9382 and hook up with this one and more.
