Pillbox seems to be singer / composer / guitarist / bassist / keyboardist / producer Susan Hyatt and whoever she wants it to be. Fifteen musicians make appearances in a revolving set of eleven trios and quartets to produce the fifteen songs on Gimme What I Want.
Well, if that's what Susan Hyatt wants, I'm more than happy to give it to her, because the result is a terrific album. As many things as she does on this disc, she does them all well. The sound is tough and tight, with a new wave undertone that proves there's new life in old genres. There's a grit here that was too often absent the first time the new wave crashed to shore, though, that takes the music well beyond the label. Well worth enough repeated listening to make it well worth owning.
