BILL EVANS/JIM HALL
Undercurrent (Blue Note)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Recorded in the Spring of 1962, this pairing of guitarist Jim Hall and pianist Bill Evans was an immediate classic. The remarkable musical empathy of the duo becomes apparent as soon as Hall responds to Evans' opening figure on "My Funny Valentine," and the two continue to alternately push and pull one another through the rest of the set, with a level of communication that produces some jaw-dropping moments and invariably beautiful music.

This CD reissue takes advantage of contemporary 24 bit mastering technology to capture every nuance. This is great music sounding great, and it's a must have for fans of either performer or great jazz in general.
