BRUCE McCABE
self-titled (Ryan Cory Records)

There's a reason that Bruce McCabe's record reminds me of Jonny Lang. Bruce's "day job" is playing piano for Jonny Lang. He's also penned "Lie To Me," "Rack 'Em Up," and "Wander This World" for Jonny, but this CD features Bruce's solo work. He's enlisted fellow Jonny Lang bandmates Paul Diethelm on guitar, Doug Nelson on bass, and Billy Thommes on drums. Sadly, Doug was killed by a truck while he was walking along the highway in Minnesota after this CD was recorded. Jonny sits in on "Good at Feeling Bad," but my favorites on this disc are rocking "The Stakes Have Gone Up" and the rockabilly-tinged "Rich Poor Man." Bruce has said he's not going to leave his day job and that this CD will be available at Jonny Lang's shows. If he ever wanted to start off on his own as a solo artist, Bruce McCabe shouldn't worry. He must be proud of the dozen high quality, literate cuts on this rock and blues record.
