JOAN BAEZ
Joan Baez/5 (Vanguard)
Farewell Angelina (Vanguard)

It was the emotional depth of her delivery that endeared Joan Baez to
folk audiences after her Newport debut in 1959. Possessing one of the
clearest voices in any genre wasn't necessarily a plus among the hardcore
folkies, who tended to value "authenticity" over mere ability.
Joan, though, managed to offer both, offering definitive interpretations of
Child ballads and other traditional material over the course of her first
four albums.
Joan Baez/5, released in 1964, signaled a transformation in her material as
she drew more and more from contemporary sources, whether topical material
from Phil Ochs and Richard Farina or a country tune from Johnny Cash. She
also offered a tune from a then up and coming songwriter she had become both
personally and professionally associated with, Bob Dylan.
By the next year, Dylan's music was pervasive both in the culture at large
and in the Baez repertoire. There are four Dylan cuts on Farewell Angelina,
and another, "One Too Many Mornings," was recorded at the album sessions and
is restored here among the bonus cuts.
These releases are 20 bit conversions from the original masters, and the
aural qualities are a fine match for the deluxe packaging provided, which
includes original art and notes and comprehensive new commentary.
These are superb examples of one of the seminal figures in the folk revival
at the height of her artistic power.
