LOS SHAKERS
For You (Eli Cid)
Reviewed by Alan Wright
I know nothing about this '60s band from Uruguay, who play Beat music,
heavy on the Beatles/Merseybeat side of things. There's a song on Glimpses,
Vol.3, which I've never found a copy of, by a Los Shakers, but I don't know
if it's the same band or not. I looked it up in the quite useful "Children
Of Nuggets" book of garage comps. That song, "De Jame Ir" isn't on here,
but 27 other songs are. These guys were a pretty crack outfit. They sing
mostly in English, although they do a version of "Ticket To Ride" in their
native language! They also do other Beatles songs like "Girl" and
"Michelle," and quite well I might add. Lots of harmonies, and poppy type
stuff, and I think a lot of the other songs are originals, too. This isn't
fuzzed-out maniac garage rock, but rather quite competent and thoroughly
enjoyable stuff. I like songs like "Break It All," "Do Not Disturb" and
"Keep Searching" a lot. A few of the songs are repeated at the end in
different versions, with some studio chatter at the beginning. Stuff is
taken from two albums, singles plus some unreleased outtakes. Fans of the
more pop side of Beat music will want to check this out!
