THE ABYSSINNIANS AND FRIENDS
Tree Of Satta (Blood and Fire)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

Much like other music forms, reggae borrows from itself, sometimes to incredible extremes. Take Satta Massa Gana, heralded by many as thee classic roots song, and which has been swiped to create almost 500 tunes with the same bassline signature. Much like traditional blues numbers, the song has seen quite an evolution, with twenty such permutations presented here. Besides an historic curiosity this collection serves as an overview of the development of reggae since the sixties, and how the seed has survived through many style shifts. It also happens to be a pretty good slab of music.
