Chris Difford
I Didn't Get Where I Am (DRT)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
On the back of the CD case there's a picture of an old Fender amp. Wishful thinking I suppose. Squeeze was a music force a long time ago, and even that band was anxiously leaving the rock out of rock and roll. Chris Difford marches on in a quest for pure pop mastery, and though his wordplay remains sharp as ever, the endless barrage of hooks from yesteryear is nowhere to be found (former partner Glenn Tilbrook was the melody man). The Paul McCartney silly love songs angle is now more akin to James Taylor balladeering. Kinda nice and warm, but in a plodding fashion. What used to be hum along music is now relegated to ho-hum.
