DANA
Thread Of Blue (Water Records)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
At times, Dana Mase shows a tendency toward the ethereal and an understated
spirituality that pushes her sound in a decidedly 'new age' direction, but
consumers of dreamy soundscapes for their meditation sessions should
approach with caution. When the lady wants to rock out, she rocks out, and
even on less rhythmically energetic material, she can display an intensity
that's likely to knock you out of any contemplative reverie.
Be clear - I think that's a good thing. I like energy, and respect first
class production values, and enjoy music that drives my attention toward
higher realms than my groin. Still, once in a while I like to get up and
dance, and Dana allows for that, too. It's more Joni Mitchell than Madonna
for the most part, but there's enough of each to hold the attention of fans
of either. There's certainly enough to hold mine.
This is her first release since she had some AC/AA chart action in 1998.
That's too long away, but her time has apparently been well used, because
her follow up is, if a bit tardy, a very nice piece of work.
