DIGBY
Falling Up (Toucan Cove)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
A year ago, Digby was pitching Go Digby, an indie released aimed primarily
at their hometown market, Louisville, Kentucky. The pitch worked, and seven
of the tracks (with five new cuts added) have survived to appear on their
first nationally distributed release, Falling Up.
The appeal is apparent. All the patented power pop elements - strong
melodies, razor sharp hooks and ear candy harmonies - are present, along
with lyrical twists that reflect intellect and humor. It's the kind of
music that music lovers love, played in the way that shows off the cohesion
between players who have worked out all the kinks through years of hard work
on the midwest club circuit. Whether you consider it a debut effort or a
sophomore outing, it displays a level of musical maturity that belies
either description.
They've been at it quite a while (the band traces it's roots to 1995) and
they seem to be in it for the long haul. I know I'll be listening for as
long as it lasts.
(The disc offers a couple of bonuses - the key to access 12 more tracks from
the band's website and a hidden track featuring another band worth getting
to know, the muckrakers.)
