The heart of this six disc set lies in the five studio albums Jerry Garcia released under his own name or as the Jerry Garcia Band during perhaps his most fertile artistic decade. The albums, Garcia (1972), (Compliments of) Garcia (1974), Reflections (1976), Cats Under The Stars (1978) and Run For The Roses (1982) have been carefully remastered, making a great sounding set to replace the old vinyl and tape that many of us have preserved these albums on.
The soul of the set, though, often lies in the bonus tracks that have been appended to each album, and in the sixth disc, titled Outtakes, Jams & Alternates and stuffed with even more previously unreleased Garcia material.
That's right, there's a ton of new music in this set, and it's previously been held closely to the Garcia estate vest (I'll spare you the saga of Deadhead politics on that issue). Even those with well rounded collections from the multi-decade catalog of unreleased Dead related music that's in circulation will likely hear things they've never heard and may have thought they never would. Compilation producers James Austin, David Gans and Blair Jackson had free access to a wealth of unreleased material from the album sessions and beyond, and have sifted out a variety of tracks that can be treasured for a variety of reasons. There are ready for release outtakes beside productions sketches which, in some cases, are as valuable for the insight into Garcia's creative process as for the performance presented.
And speaking of insight into Garcia's creative process, the 130 page, picture packed booklet includes an introductory essay by his co-creator and close friend for decades, Robert Hunter, along with more notes and comprehensive discography information.
The audience for this much Jerry Garcia in one lump is pretty well defined by now, and if you fall under the heading, this one is more than well worth your attention: it's got hours of essential listening.
