MILE 8
Whatever Works (Farbin Records)

While I consider myself a jam band fan in general, I have to admit that the
'groove band' end of the spectrum isn't my favorite. I have a fondness for
melody and lyrical narrative that generally escapes that particular school.
I guess it comes down to the fact that one of my favorite things about music
is songs. When I do want to get caught up in a groove, I'm more likely to
turn to a straight ahead funk unit, or a classic R&B sound.
That being said, when a group of musicians is having as much obvious fun as
this Nashville based sextet is on their debut album, it's hard not to get
caught up in it. Sure enough, the Mile 8 groove proves to be infectious.
'Groove jam' is a kind of music. Some people like it, some don't. If you
have any taste for it at all (and like I said, I'm a fan of jam bands in
general, if they're at all good at what they do), Mile 8 is going to be one
of the bands you like. Good players having big fun has a charm all its own,
regardless of genre.
