Covering the likes of Parliament Funkadelic and Abba in a country vein seems like Ween territory (blasphemous prankster time), but hold on there partner cuz this project is of the very serious nature. Serious music that is. There's no denying the hook when "Knowing Me Knowing You" kicks in, but tis the sweeping slide guitar and brushes on cardboard box drumming that elevate this from mere bubblegum to chewin' tobacco. You know, adult entertainment. Wait till you get an ear full of "Maggot Brain": no funk but plenty of heart-wrenching soul. Making sweet country music in Detroit rock city should be a chore, but the Volebeats make it seem nice and easy.
