BIG METEOR
Wild River (Big Meteor)
Reviewed by Shaun Dale
This self-produced CD by the Ottawa, Ontario based duo Big Meteor is
primarily a showcase for the songwriting talent of vocalist/guitarist/
composer David Wimble. Wimble and his partner in performance, guitarist
Larry Wayne Church, get help from a half dozen friends on a variety of
instruments, so it's a little hard to judge just what Church adds when
they're working alone, but there are several fine guitar solos that are
apparently his on the CD. He's an able picker, and if you're anywhere
near the Hard Times Cafe in Ottawa, you can hear what exactly what the
duo mix sounds like on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
What does the CD sound like? Well, honestly, it sounds a bit like a
songwriter in search of a genre from time to time, as Wimble skips from
country to rock to Celtic to blues. Most all of it is just fine, but
musically he seems to be closer to fine when he decides to rock a bit.
Lyrically, he's at his best when he avoids the excessively metaphysical.
And when he's at his best, David Wimble can write a damn fine song.
