ERIC NEHER
Shame Train (Treehouse Music)

Reviewed by Erci Steiner

Guitarist Eric Neher plays and writes like he's been around a long time even though he's a newcomer on New York's Treehouse Music. Fronting a tight three-piece band featuring Robert Boyd on bass and Don Yellech on drums, Eric's nine cuts feature straightahead rock guitar with no frills. His songwriting rarely ventures far from love songs, usually love lost or unrequited. While his powerchords dominate the disc, "Corinthian Leather" and "Fool's Gold" show that he's adept plumbing the softer sides of depression, kind of like a raggedly urban Richard Buckner. Neher's covering similar emotional territory and "Shame Train" gives him a chance to show off some great rock guitar chops on the disc's radio-friendliest cut. Neher's worth a listen to see what's new in urban rock with an edge, New York-style.
