THE SCORPIONS
EYE II EYE (Koch)

There it is! Track 13! Almost good enough to make you forget the 12 that
crept by at caterpillar speed before it. Not that the songs are all ballady
and slow (though many are). It simply felt like glacier watching. The
thing looks huge, you know what it can do, but it's apparently not gonna
happen in YOUR lifetime. The Scorpions were once leaders of the headbanger
set, capable of writing powerhouse hooks and well structured tunes, yet too
explosive to be lumped in with the pop metal hair boys of the 80s. They've
obviously still got their musical skills honed to a fine point, and a few of
the ballads are probably pleasing to those who look to metal bands for ballads.
Me, I want a bloody forehead when I pop a Scorps CD in the player. Track 13,
"Aleyah," woulda been a bloodbath if it had been track one, or even track two,
but a dozen overproduced tracks (thanks, Peter Wolf) left me numb. If you
hear the name Scorpions and think "Blackout" or "The Zoo," you'll have the
same glassy-eyed expression I had by the end of this thing. If, on the other
hand, the name Scorpions only makes you think of "Still Loving You," then
step right up.
