LYLE LOVETT
Dr. T & The Women Soundtrack (Curb/MCA)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Listening to Lyle Lovett music is like reading a good book - you may not always know what's coming next, but you want to find out. When it's all over, you want to go back to the beginning and start all over again. This time, Lovett has pulled that trick off in one of the hardest ways of all, the instrumental soundtrack.

Soundtracks are usually full of incidental and background tunes that work better cinematically that musically, but Lovett and his Large Band cohorts bassist Viktor Krauss and pianist Matt Rollings have collaborated on a set of instrumental film pieces that are actually very good songs. If there's an exception it would be "The Crash," a montage that will probably be more appealing to those who can put it in the context of Robert Altman's new film Dr. T & The Women, starring Richard Gere. For the most part, though, Lovett offers up a mix of Western swing, cocktail blues and pop ballads that provide some real fine listening. Roll in a trio of classic Lovett vocal performances and you've got a soundtrack album worth getting.
