MARY KARLZEN
Dim The Watershed (Y&T Music)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Mary Karlzen's early nineties work for Miami based indie Y&T got attention in all the right places, ultimately making her the first independent artist in regular rotation on VH-1, putting her on tour with Bob Dylan, Jackson Browne and other heavy hitters and earning her a major label shot with Atlantic, which released Yelling At Mary in 1995.

As sometimes happens, major label life wasn't all it was cracked up to be, and she parted ways with Atlantic after a two year, one album tenure. Now she's back at the scene of her initial success, Y&T, and she's back in great form. Karlzen still straddles genres with ease, her vocals are still alternately strong as steel and little-girl vulnerable, and she's got a terrific set of new songs.

The ten tracks on Dim The Watershed are hard to categorize as anything other than Mary Karlzen songs. If you know her work, that should be more than enough to send you in search of this one. If you were asleep for the first half of the last decade, suffice to say that if you like country, pop, rock or contemporary folk music at all, there's gonna be something on this album you'll love.

Track List:

When You Go * One Thing * Closer * Sun & Moon * Time * She * Pictures Of You * Reunion * Wonderland * Harbor Lights
