16 HORSEPOWER
Hoarse (Checkered Past)

Reviewed by John Sekerka

Of all the practitioners of southern American gothic music, David Edwards may be the real deal. He not only plays it, but lives it, Old Testament style, making his own instruments, shunning electrical transportation devices. As the resonant voice of 16 Horsepower Edwards stirs up spine-chilling vignettes about black souls and fire spirits. Powerful music finally captured in a live setting on the brilliant Hoarse . Paying due where it's properly due, Edwards slips in some Gun Club, some Joy Division and absolutely raises John Fogerty's "Bad Moon Rising" from the dead. A vital curse you should be blessed with.
