BOBBY CONN
The Golden Age (Thrill Jockey)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
A couple of weeks back Bobby Conn blew through town with his arena style rockinroll circus. Dressed in a swanky purple vinyl suit, Conn's five foot nuthin' frame took centre stage and belted out the rock. Jumping into the crowd to ensure proper attention, Conn wailed in a Tim Buckley mode and showed off an Eddie Van Halen dexterity on his axe. Speaking of which ... A couple of burners in a string broke, and while Bobby was fixing his weapon of choice, the band chugged through "Hot For Teacher". The impromptu cover enticed Conn to excitedly join in, and the rest is pure magic. Prog rock that actually rocks? Oh yeah, Bobby's got an album out. Onnit he proves to be Chicago's Prince, and then some. Beware, beware the wrath of Conn!
