LOLA BARBERSHOP
Sportsman EP (Torpedo Records)
Reviewed by DJ Johnson
They're from Sweden but they sound like they rehearsed in the garage
next to the Cowsills' house and walked around with 45-rpm carrying cases
filled with records by The Beach Boys, Dino, Desi & Billy and other groups
with similarly poppy leanings in the 60s. They've learned the lesson of
pop structure well enough to create songs that feel good, and because all four
sing and understand what made 60s pop harmony so fine, the songs sound and feel
even better. There isn't a lead vocalist because it's all harmony all the time,
a bit reminiscent of some of The Byrds' finest moments. There are five songs
clocking in at 17:27 here. Just a little thing, but potent. Very potent.
