THE RELAMPAGOS
New World (Sirena Music)
Reviewed by Eric Steiner
There's a world of music offshore. The Relampagos (lightning bolts in their
native Spanish) released over 45 singles in Europe and were known as Spain's
premiere instrumental surf band for over three decades. None of their 60's music
made it Stateside, until Ivan Pongracic and Mark English of the Space Cossacks
enlisted Agent Orange's Sam Bolle and Dusty Watson (Dick Dale's drummer) to
bring back these frantic 17 songs of surf for Sirena Records. Original
Relampagos Pablo Herrero and Jose Louis Armenteros reprise their heyday on
keyboards and guitar, and it's a lot of fast-paced fun. Think Dick Dale, the
Ventures or other guitar players that play faster than lightning, throw in some
mysterious European background stylings, plus a little flamenco, and you've got
The Relampagos.
