STAN GETZ
My Old Flame (Concord)
Reviewed by Ron Saranich
My Old Flame is a newly issued two-fer by Concord Records of previously
released material by Stan Getz, The Dolphin and Spring Is Here. Both were
recorded live at Keystone Korner in San Francisco during 1981, when Getz
was in the process of making the Bay Area his home. Getz, on tenor
saxophone, was joined by Lou Levy on piano, Monty Budwig on bass, and
Victor Lewis on drums.
Through this date, Getz's tenor playing was consistent, melodic, and
swinging at any tempo. Highly evocative and intimate, Getz's solos
simply shine. His selection of notes is sublime. As a group, these
four players clicked, interacting near to perfection. The playing on
tunes such as "A Time For Love," "The Night Has A Thousand Eyes," "Old
Devil Moon," and "I'm Old Fashion" is strong, focussed, and dynamic.
My Old Flame is classic Getz. Its not among his essential works, but it
is excellent nonetheless. If you want to round out your Getz collection
with material from late in his career, here is an impressive place to
start.
