THE STONE COYOTES
Born To Howl (Red Cat)
Reviewed by John Sekerka
Great gawd almighty this thing has a death grip on me. I really shouldn't be
listening to this sorta thing - a power trio cranking basic bluesy rock riffs -
but I can't help myself. It's that voice you see. Barbara Keith owns it, and she
knows how to use it, all sultry and deep and kinetic and ... kick ass. The lady
can sing, belt it out, rattle the chandelier, send shivers, get the dogs
howling, that sorta action. She also plays a mean guitar, name checks Joey
Ramone and Jerry Lee Lewis, nods respect to Motorhead and Black Sabbath in her
signature "First Lady of Rock," and runs through a blistering version of Dolly
Parton's "Jolene." Been a long time for this kinda throwback to the classic rock
sound of punchy dynamics ideally suited for smoky bars. Smoky bars are no more
but the sound lives on. If you ever wondered what the grandfolks mean when they
talked about getting the mojo working, then listen up.
