CAROL FRAZIER
Life's A Ride (Hapi Skratch)

Reviewed by Shaun Dale

Singer/lyricist Carol Frazier has assembled a top line group of Colorado's best to join her on Life's A Ride, including saxophonist Nelson Rangell, guitarist Dave Beegle and pianist/composer Taylor Mesple', the latter of whom produced the album and co-wrote most of the original material. The result is a strong presentation of Frazier's versatility both as a performer and composer. Ranging from straight pop to hard swing, but always with a jazzy atmosphere based on both the contributions of the instrumentalists and Frazier's phrasing, this is an album in search of a market - is it AOR? Soft jazz? Straight jazz? Is that a touch of gospel I hear?

What is it? In the final analysis, just good music played and sung by talented people. This is as good an argument against the commercial compartmentalization of music as you'll hear this year, and it's better music that you'll find in most of those commercial compartments.
