I swear, if Duluth, Minnesota, wasn't covered with ice and snow
three-quarters of the year, it'd be the trendiest place for alternative kids
to hang out for the sole reason that this band is from there. Their music
reflects the weather conditions residents of Lake Superior's shores are
constantly bombarded with - beautiful, cold, deceptively calm, and not even
slightly peaceful. Within the slow, measured beats of these quiet songs
about love, death, and the passage of time hide layers of tension that build
and build until you're fighting to restrain yourself from jumping out
windows or pulling your hair out to release some of the pressure. It's just
wonderful. Whatever it is that makes people write music like this, it's
probably best for the sanity of the rest of the world that it's confined to
isolated geographical pockets - at least we have the option of turning the
stereo off when the album's done.
